What do the listed measurements represent?

  • The measurements of rod blanks were taken on a single copy of each model number.  The number of digits used to represent the result indicates how reliable the measurements on THAT copy were.  The assumption is that our high-quality suppliers can be trusted to produce items that are very close.  However, the listed measurement results should not be understood as guaranteed values.  Note that some rod blanks require trimming before meeting the maximum length restrictions of   particular casting came.
  • The weight classifications of fly lines are a guide as to their suitability for specific casting events.  Line diameters, which generally correlate to line weight, are checked by sampling newly received batches.  It remains the caster's responsibility to verify that their entire line meets the requirements of a particular casting game.  Lines with length restrictions may or may not require trimming to meet specifications.
  • Plug weights are checked 100% to ensure they fall within the range specified by the Rules and Tournament Regulations of the ACA.  It remains the caster's responsibility to verify that their plug meets the requirements of a particular casting game after use or the application of paint.

How measurements were made

  • Length measurements of rod blanks were made using a common metal tape measure. Care was taken to round the length reading accurate to 0.1 inches.
  • Diameter measurements were taken with digital calipers with a readout to 0.0005 inches.  The number of digits included in the reported result was adjusted such that only the last included digit has some variation as the diameter is measured while rotating the measured piece.
  • Mass (weight) measurements were typically performed with a calibrated digital scale with a readout to 0.01 grams.  Items beyond the 200 g range of this scale were weighed using a common kitchen scale (with unknown reliability).
  • The measurement of the bend in rod blanks was made via a vertical tape measure placed to coincide with horizontal position of the tip.  The vertical difference between the loaded and unloaded state was reported.  The load was added by tying it with a non-slip string to the blank approximately 1 inch from the tip.  The amount of bend of any part of the blank other than the very tip may be estimated from the picture which was taken with the goal to minimize distortions due to perspective.  The blanks were held in a support structure with a width of 12.0".  The butt end of each blank was aligned with the end of the support structure.  The support was nominally horizontal.
